40 Book Challenge

40 Book Challenge

This year you will expand your horizons as a reader through reading a variety of books. The more you read, the more you learn. So this year we will be participating in the 40 book challenge which challenges you to read a total of 40 books in different genres throughout the school year. Just like ice cream comes in different flavors, books come in different types of genres like Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Graphic Novels, and even Informational Text. You will be learning about each of these genres at the beginning of the school year. Sometimes it can be hard finding a book that you are interested in so we will share what we are reading through our classroom blog and book commercials in class. This page is where you will have a chance to share your reading experiences with your classmates and your families.

Here are the genres you will be learning about and your reading requirements for each category. Any book that is longer than 284 pages will count as 2 books.

10 Chapter Books- Any genre. This is your choice.

5 Books Recommended by a Friend- Each week you will hear book commercials from your classmates. Choose 5 books that you read because you heard it as a book commercial or a friend recommended it to you.

2 Biography- These are books that tell the story of people’s lives but are written by another person. You should read one biography about a person in history and another biography will be about an inventor.

2 Poetry- Poetry is verse written to create a response of thought and feeling from the reader. It often uses rhyme or rhythm. This can be a collection of poems or a book that is written in verse.

5 Informational- These are texts that provide facts about a variety of topics. You can choose any topic you want to learn about when choosing a nonfiction book.

2 Mystery- A Mystery is a suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is not solved until the end of the story. Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys are great mystery books you should try.

3 Fantasy- Fantasy books are stories that are not possible in real life. They may include talking animals or magical powers. The Warrior Series is a great example of this genre.

1 Graphic Novel- Graphic novels have more to do with the layout of the book versus what the story is about. This type of book tells a story through comic book frames. Big Nate is one example of a graphic novel.

2 Science Fiction- This is a type of fantasy book that uses science and technology. These type of stories may include things like robots, time travel, and cool inventions. The Invention of Hugo Cabret is one example of a book that is Science Fiction.

2 Historical Fiction- This is a fictional story that takes place in a specific time period. Often the setting in the story is real, but the characters are made up. AVI is a great author to try in this genre.

4 Realistic Fiction- In this type of story you will find fictional characters but the events that are taking place could happen in real life. Ramona and Beezus is an example of a book in this category.

2 Traditional Literature/Classics- These are stories that are passed down from one group to another. These include fairy tales, folk tales, myths, fables, and legends. Alice in Wonderland would be one example of a book that would be classified as Traditional Literature.
